Self Report - Summary and Suggestions

6.     Summary and Suggestions

Student teachers summarize what you had done during your practicum according to topics as follows:

1.1      Purposes of practicum
The purpose of the program is to prepare a good future teachers by teaching in another country. It also to improve the English proficiency. Besides, by joining the program, the student teachers can have many experiences when living in another country. The student teachers can exchange their own culture with the cultures from another country directly. The most important is to maintain a good relationship between Indonesia-Philippine-Thailand. Hope the other ASEAN countries can also join this program.
1.2      Procedures of practicum
Orientation in the College, Orientation in the School, Observation and Teaching Assistant, Teaching Practice, Evaluation, and Reflection.
1.3      Outcomes of practicum
There are three outcomes of the practicum. They are:
1)       The student teacher can improve the English proficiency;
2)       The student teacher has many experiences regarding teaching the students from another country and the culture of the country; and
3)       The student teacher gains more knowledge regarding the teaching skill and pedagogy.
1.4      The challenges of practicum
Since I live in the EFL country (English for Foreign Language), Indonesia, it is a big challenge for me to teach and live in the ESL country (English for Second Language), the Philippines. Most people in the Philippines including the students use English as their second language. At first, it made me under the pressure; however, fortunately I can manage it well.
1.5      Overall impression
It is really great having many experiences of living in a ESL country. Most people in the Philippines can speak English very well. In this case, I do not find difficulties in communicating with them. furthermore, I find that living there in thirty days really improve my English proficiency. Besides, many of them are really good in treating me. Many good things and challenging things happen which can be learn so that I can be a good future teacher and a better person for my country.
1.6      Suggestions for future improvement
1)       For SEAMEO
The exchange pre-service teacher program is a good program to improve students’ English proficiency and to improve their way of teaching. The suggestion for the organization is to oversee the process in conducting the program so that everything will be running smoothly and well. Besides that, it will be better if the other ASEAN countries can join the program.
2)       For Saint Mary’s University
The treatment from Saint Mary’s University was beyond expectation. It was really satisfying. Everything went so well, even very well. From the president, lectures and the students college were really helpful. The program was also well organized. The suggestion is it is better if the university make a timeline in detail regarding the schedule of the student teachers who join the program.
3)       For School
The school is the best school. The facilities and the services are good an well organized. The suggestion for the school is to maintain the achievement of the students, the facilities and services from the school.
4)       For Cooperating Teacher
The cooperating teacher is really considerate. He even conducted a small seminar in making lesson plan for the student teachers to make them more understand. The suggestion for his is to communicate more with the exchange student-teacher and also to consider the time which the exchange student-teacher has.

Self Report - Teaching Practice

5.     Teaching practice

For teaching practice, please write a teaching plan and consult with teacher (of your teaching subject). Then student teachers will be assigned to teach in class and reflect on their teaching after class. Please write a report on the teaching practice according to topics as follows:

1.1      Procedures of teaching
For teaching practice, I prepared two kinds of lesson plan. I made Indonesian format and Philippine format. I used Indonesian format for the first two days, and Philippine format for last two days. I only taught 4 days in that week, because Monday was holiday. I didn’t get many advices for Indonesian format. The teachers said that I really know about that. They only gave the corrections for the grammar. For the Philippines format, I got a lot of suggestions and corrections. Over all, there were three main parts of teaching procedures, Pre Developmental Activities, Developmental Activities and Post Developmental Activities. Pre Developmental. Pre developmental Activities consists of pray, checking attendance, recall and motivation. Developmental Activities consists of topics to be discusses and guide questions for deliver the materials. This part explain how the teachers deliver the materials in the class. Post Developmental Activities consists of generalization and evaluation. Generalization is the part of the lesson for the teachers to review what they have been discussed in that meeting. Evaluation is the part of the lesson to check the understatements of the students to the topic that they have learn. But the students answer in this part will be not used in grading.

1.2      Time management and organizing activities
My supervisor instructors give me some feedback to help me prioritize basic classroom tasks as well as increase my productivity so I can have more time to spend teaching as follow:
Prioritize: If I set priorities it can help me keep on track when something unexpected may occur.
Give homework: Don’t be afraid to leave the repetitive assignments that help reinforce those important concepts for homework. By doing this, it clears up extra time in class for those important lessons. Leave all of the assignment that relate to practice for homework.
Ensure time allocation: Make sure to follow the time allocation since the teaching learning here takes 30 minutes less than in Indonesia. Thus, it is better not to spend much time in the pre or post activity.
    Maximize lesson planning.
1.3      Problem-solving
After conducting the teaching practice in the school, things that need to be improved are the ability to overcome unexpected things that may and voice controlling during teaching learning process. My mentor suggested me as the teacher to prepare plan B for teaching. So if the plan A does not work, I can still keep the teaching process run well. Moreover, I should know how to make tone of my voice in the class. I need to make the tone high when I seek students’ attention.
1.4      Classroom management
I learn so much experiences in Philippines . Here they use sit plan to the students. Every class had different sit plan. It depends on the class. Start from observation and teaching assistance, I got the experiences in classroom management. The teacher should also had the better voice so it would be helpful in classroom management. Especially in group activity, we had to be clear give the direction. How we divided into some groups and also explain how the technical of their activity should do.

Self Report - Observation on Teacher

4.     Observation on Teacher(s)

After observing and studying about teacher(s), please write a report on following topics:
a.         Planning for Teaching
The making of lesson plan is manually made by the teacher. The teacher is required to make the lesson plan for a week or for the the whole topic. Usually, a topic can be done in a week or more. The lesson plan is semi-detailed lesson plan.
b.        Preparing Lesson and Materials
The teacher prepares the material by her own; however, the base is the textbook. Sometimes the teacher also make her own instructional material for teaching the topic if it is necessary.
c.         Teaching in Class
In finishing a topic, usually the teacher divides the meetings into some sections. For example, on the first meeting she will explain the topic first and have question and answer section meanwhile for the third meeting the teaching will conduct a game section regarding the topic to teach the students. In conducting the game, the teacher will make the instructional material (the property of the game).
d.        Measurement and Evaluation
The teacher always uses question and answer method in teaching the students. In the end of the lesson, she always gives them assignment that will be discussed on the next day. The teacher conducts two evaluations since the topic is divided into two; the literature part and grammar part. The evaluations are done separately in the different meeting.

Self Report - Teaching Plan

3. Teaching Plan

After observation, please write a report about school teaching plan according to topics as follows:

1.1     Curriculum
Saint Mary’s University Grade School Department uses the k12 curriculum. However, the curriculum is modified by the school since it is private school. For example like having a special class for English subject (in term of speaking skill).
All the teachers have to submit all next week lesson plan to the head of the subject first before they teach the students. It means that they have to finish all the five days lesson plan at least three days before it. Then, the teachers should revise the lesson plan if the head of the subject asks to do that. Usually, the head of the subject is the senior one who has more experiences than the others.
Bellow is the lesson plan that have been created by the student teacher SEA-Teacher Project during the teaching practice SEA-Teacher Project at the Saint Mary’s University Grade School Department.
